Parish Background
This parish is a metochion (Representation Church) of the Monastery of All Saints of North America. It is served by the Monastery clergy.
History
The parish was founded in 1982 by a group of worshippers who had been using the private chapel of Dr Edward Hartley. The congregation purchased a church in Murrayville, a suburb of the city of Langley, BC. Bishop Nicholas Smisko (present bishop of the Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Church) consecrated the church in 1984.
For some time, the parish was served by Fr Andrew Morbey and later by Fr Dumitru Diaconescu. The parish remained quite small during the early years. With the retirement of Fr Dumitru, parishioners invited Fr Varlaam (now Bishop) to serve the parish. Later, Hieromonk Moses began to act as a teacher for the young people in the parish and to serve with Vladika Varlaam. With the ordination of Deacon John Bingham, the divine services took on a new fullness and majesty unique to hierarchical divine services with priest and deacon assisting. In 2005 Fr John was ordained to the Holy Priesthood.
At St Nicholas Church, full congregational singing is practised, led by Reader/Chanter Andrew Bingham and Reader Phillip Ptashnik. Subdeacons Gilles Parent, Vasile Samoila, George Patrikeeff and Gerasimos McLaughlin, assist for the Divine Liturgies. The present parish president, Gerasimos McLaughlin, has directed many improvements in the grounds and facilities of the church. The parish has continued to grow over the past few years and shares warm fraternal relations with its sister OCA parishes in British Columbia. At present the parish church and hall are undergoing major renovations with a new heating and cooling system, a new and enlarged kitchen and the renovation of the parish hall. New hand-painted icons from the Kiev-Caves Monastery have been donated for the iconostasis, with new lamps for all the main icons.
