Ste-Catherine Sisterhood
The Ste-Catherine Sisterhood was founded in 1934 by Mrs Catherine Lows. Since its very beginnings, the Sisterhood provides timely and invaluable support to parish life by organising luncheons and coffee hours following Sunday Liturgies, and holding garage sales and bazaars, for the purpose of collecting funds in support of the parish. Over the years, the Sisterhood has made important contributions to the parish finances, for which the parish council is very grateful. Coffee hours allow parishioners to gather together after praying and socialize; this contributes immensely to the well-being of the parish. Activities continue to this day. The Sisterhood is constantly on the look-out for new members who will volunteer to lend a hand to older members, some of whom have been contributing for over half a century.

Parish Background

Founded in 1907 and incorporated in 1915 by immigrants from the Russian Empire, SS Peter and Paul eventually moved to its present location, a former Anglican Church, in a solemn public procession. The parishioners, of mixed slavic background, have been served by a distinguished and dedicated series of deacons, priests, and bishops, including Bishop Antony and Archbishop Sylvester, Priests Oleg Boldireff, George Benigsen, John Tkachuk, and Deacons Peter Svetlovsky, Peter Feochary, and Gregory Maksymiuk. The community has produced a number of clergy for the Church. The sisterhood and brotherhood contribute greatly to the family life of the parish; and the choir has always been a leader in singing. The late Alexander A. Kaminsky was a well-known and long-time director who performed his duties at this parish for nearly fourty years. He was followed by Mr. Michael A. Woinowsky-Krieger who ably handled the duties of both choir director and psalomshtchik for over ten years. Mr. Woinowsky-Krieger had the good fortune to serve on the kliros with Mr. Kaminsky and the late Alexander I. Chomicz, was psalomshtchik at the parish for nearly fifty years until his repose in 2001 at the age of 91. The current choir director is Olena A. Ilvakhina.

Please consult the parish's web site at http://montreal.orthodoxy.ru for more information on its history, its clergy, its parishioners and recent events.
