Updated information on search for OCA Chancellor, Secretary, Treasurer, Comptroller, and Director of Ministries and Communications

SYOSSET, NY [OCA Communications/January 5, 2007] — As announced in mid-December 2006, applications are now being accepted for the positions of chancellor, secretary, treasurer, and director of ministries and communications of the Orthodox Church in America. Applications for a fifth position, that of comptroller, are also being accepted.

At the joint meeting of the Holy Synod of Bishops and the Metropolitan Council held December 11-13, 2006, a search committee was formed under the aegis of the Organizational Task Force. The committee, which consists of Peter Bohlender, Mary Caetta, Michelle Jannakos, Bob Kornafel, Gregory Nescott, Eleana Silk, Dr. Faith Skordinski, the Very Rev. Matthew Tate, the Very Rev. David Vernak, Dr. Richard West, Al Wetmore, and Deacon John Zarras, is responsible for receiving, evaluating, and recommending suitable candidates to fill the five full-time positions.

All five positions will be based at the OCA Chancery, Syosset, NY. Salary and benefits are commensurate with pay and benefits in the Long Island, NY, area.

1. CHANCELLOR OF THE ORTHODOX CHURCH IN AMERICA: Serves as assistant and advisor to the Metropolitan of the Orthodox Church in America, responsible for the development, nurturing, and welfare of the clergy of the Church.
Assists the Metropolitan in managing national-level clergy-related activities, including seminarian development and ordination, inter-Diocesan transfers, continuing education, and retired clergy and widows support. Works closely with the Church’s hierarchs and seminaries. Supports and/or guides and directs the work of assigned OCA Departments, Committees, Boards, and Commissions related to clergy affairs. As assigned, represents the Metropolitan in religious and spiritual activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

a. Priest in good standing in the OCA, with excellent pastoral experience and skills.

b. Is held in high respect by hierarchs, clergy, and laity.

c. Knowledge of Church structure, canon law, and traditions.

d. Ability to express ideas and conclusions effectively and persuasively, both orally and in writing.

e. Skill in interpersonal relations.

2. SECRETARY OF THE ORTHODOX CHURCH IN AMERICA: Serves as the primary administrative manager of the OCA. Maintains the legal status of the Church. Implements and assures compliance with Federal, State, and local statutes and other relevant regulatory requirements. Supports the Church’s Councils and Synods. Serves as team leader for planning and logistics of All-American Councils. Collects, analyzes, summarizes, and preserves the OCA’s official records and ecclesiastic materials, including overseeing its Archives. Directs the administrative, housekeeping, and facilities management of the OCA Chancery, including human resource management, and information technology. Supervises a small staff.

QUALIFICATIONS:

a. Proven executive and management skills and knowledge of a wide variety of non-profit management principles and practices, including best practices for financial accountability.

b. Thorough knowledge of the Statutes, structure, traditions, and key personnel of the Church.

c. Ability to express and present information, ideas, and conclusions clearly, concisely, and forcefully both orally and in writing.

d. Leadership/Supervisory experience.

Since this position is an Officer of the Church and a member of the Metropolitan Council, candidates must be members in good standing of the Orthodox Church in America.

3. TREASURER OF THE ORTHODOX CHURCH IN AMERICA: Serves as Chief Financial Officer of the OCA. Ensures compliance with OCA Statutes and effective execution of its Best Practices principles and policies for non-profit financial accountability Works closely with the Metropolitan Council to assist them in their financial governance responsibility. Implements and maintains internal controls for the protection of assets and reliability of financial statements. Oversees all aspects of income development, e.g., income from diocesan assessments, special appeals, Fellowship of Orthodox Stewards, endowments, grants, gifts, trusts, and investments. Develops plans and projections linking strategic goals and measurable objectives. Manages budgeting, auditing and reporting systems. Represents and is the primary advisor to the Metropolitan on financial management. Supervises a small staff.

QUALIFICATIONS:

a. Well-rounded knowledge of financial and business practices, methodology, and procedures including compliance requirements of government regulatory agencies.

b. Thorough knowledge of the financial structure of the OCA.

c. Ability to consult and advise on sensitive and important financial management issues.

d. While not a prerequisite, the possession of a Master’s degree or equivalent in accounting, business administration, management, public administration, finance or a related field is desirable.

e. Possession of CPA certification or demonstrated equivalent in education and experience is desirable.

f. Leadership/Supervisory experience.

4. DIRECTOR OF MINISTRIES AND COMMUNICATIONS: Serves as coordinator of OCA Departments and Ministries, centralized Church communications, and humanitarian and related activities. Supports, guides, and directs the work of OCA Departments, Offices, and Committees through which the work of the Church is carried out. Assists in development of goals; monitors/oversees progress against goals; assures appropriate reporting to Church Councils and Synods, as well as to the Church membership at large. Maintains and nurtures relationships with print and other media; oversees publication of The Orthodox Church and management of the OCA web site. Directs humanitarian programs and projects. Supervises a small staff.

QUALIFICATIONS:

a. Comprehensive knowledge of OCA organizations, Statutes, and programs and projects.

b. Mastery of the principles, practices, and techniques inherent in assigned programs, including best practices for financial accountability.

c. Application of executive and managerial skills.

d. Public relations skills for effective interactions with the media and public e. Ability to present complicated information and conclusions clearly, concisely, and persuasively, both orally and in writing.

f. Supervisory/leadership experience.

5. COMPTROLLER: Is responsible for overseeing the daily financial activities aspects and of the OCA as delegated by the Treasurer. Oversees the work of the financial office, including financial and accounting system controls and standards. Implements and maintains effective internal controls. Prepares the annual budget with direction from the Treasurer and the Finance Committee of the Metropolitan Council. Invoices amounts due to the OCA, manages accounts receivable and receipts all checks/cash. Maintains banking and investment relationships for the OCA; analyzes accounts.

Designs, issues and monitors all financial reports in accordance with the request and approval of the Treasurer and Finance and Audit Committees of the Metropolitan Council, and in conjunction with external auditors.
Supervises a small staff.

QUALIFICATIONS:

a. Well-rounded knowledge of financial and business accounting practices, methodology, and procedures, including requirements of governmental regulatory agencies.

b. Knowledge of best financial practices for non-profit organizations.

c. Desirable: Possession of CPA certification or demonstrated equivalent in education and experience.
