Metropolitan Hilarion [Alfeyev] to deliver 28th annual Schmemann Lecture

YONKERS, NY [OCA]—His Eminence, Metropolitan Hilarion [Alfeyev] of Volokolamsk, Chairman of the Department for External Affairs of the Patriarchate of Moscow will deliver the 28th annual Father Alexander Schmemann Memorial Lecture, titled “The Meaning of ‘Icon’ in the Orthodox Church,” in the Metropolitan Philip Auditorium of the John G. Rangos Family Foundation Building on the seminary campus at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, February 5, 2011.

The lecture is open to the public and is free of charge.

Metropolitan Hilarion, an episcopal member of the seminary’s Board of Trustees, is gifted as both a theological writer and a composer of sacred music. According to the seminary web site at www.svots.edu, he will be sharing with the seminary community and the public at-large his plentiful talents during his late winter visit to the US. Besides delivering the Schmemann Lecture, he will do a book signing at Saint Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral, the Representation of the Moscow Patriarchate, 15 East 97th St., New York, NY, after the 10:00 a.m. Divine Liturgy on Sunday, February 6. He will be signing copies of two of his books published by Saint Vladimir’s Seminary Press—Christ the Conqueror of Hell: The Descent into Hades from an Orthodox Perspective [2009] and Orthodox Christianity: Volume I: The History and Canonical Structure of the Orthodox Church, which is currently at press. He also will attend the US English-language premiere of his opus, Saint Matthew Passion, at the Church of Saint Paul the Apostle, 405 West 59th Street, New York, at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, February 7th. Metropolitan Hilarion is the author of more than 700 publications, including numerous books in Russian, English, French, Italian, German, and Finnish. Apart from his doctoral degree from Oxford, he also holds a doctorate from St. Sergius Orthodox Theological Institute in Paris.
