14th All-American Council Preconciliar Commission announces Pre-Council Workshops

The 14th All-American Council Preconciliar Commission is pleased to announce the Pre-Council Workshops.

For all participants arriving by Saturday, July 16, 2005, the following workshops will be offered from 1:30 - 4:30 pm:

UNDERSTANDING THE STATUTE

—The Statute of The Orthodox Church in America is the principle governing document of our Church. Based upon the canonical tradition of the Orthodox Church, the Statute serves to promote and support the Church’s life and mission. This workshop will introduce participants to how the Statute works and how it is reviewed and revised to meet the changing demands of church life in North America.

Archpriest David Brum and Priest Alexander Rentel

1:30-3:00 p.m.

PREVENTING SEXUAL MISCONDUCT IN THE CHURCH

—Our society has changed dramatically in response to the revelations of sexual misconduct inside and outside the Church. The Church’s greatest concern is to protect her children and all its flock from sexual misconduct while also protecting herself against false allegations of sexual misconduct. This workshop will present ways in which your parish can better prevent sexual misconduct by recognizing its warning signs and what to do if allegations of sexual misconduct are made.

Mr. Michael Herzak

1:30—3:00 pm

CONTINUING EDUCATION FOR CLERGY ON HOMILETICS

- Preaching is a central part of the proclamation of the Good News of Jesus Christ. The expectation of sound and engaging preaching which inspires and edifies the faithful should be central to every member of the clergy. This workshop will explore the importance of homiletics in the Orthodox Church and how our clergy can be more effective preachers.

Priest John Behr and Professor John Barnett—St. Vladimir’s Seminary

3:00—4:30 pm

LITURGICAL MUSIC WORKSHOP

—A practical workshop introducing the music to be sung during the All-American Council, this gathering will also help singers and directors share the Council’s music with their choirs as a means to help develop their parish music resources.
