Annual Pilgrimage to Spruce Island to mark 40th anniversary of St. Herman’s glorification
The Orthodox Church in America’s Diocese of Alaska recently announced preliminary plans for the annual Saint Herman Pilgrimage to Kodiak and Spruce Island.
This year’s pilgrimage coincides with the celebration of the 40th anniverary of the glorification of Saint Herman of Alaska months after autocephaly was granted.
The pilgrimage will formally open with the celebration of Great Vespers at Kodiak’s Holy Resurrection Cathedral on Saturday, August 7, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. A soup supper will follow at Sargeant Park, across from the cathedral.
On Sunday, August 8, the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at the cathedral at 9:00 a.m. At 11:00 a.m. the Saint Yakov Tea will be held at the Kodiak Harbor Convention Center. Vigil will be celebrated at the cathedral at 6:00 p.m.
Boats will depart from Saint Paul Harbor to Spruce Island at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, August 9. Upon arrival, the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy will be celebrated, followed by a banquet on the beach. Concurrently, the Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at the cathedral at 9:00 a.m., followed by a box lunch in Sargeant Park. Boats will leave Spruce Island for the return trip to Kodiak mid-afternoon. At 5:00 p.m. a festival will be held in Sargeant Park.
