Metropolitan Theodosius, Archbishop Herman to Preside at Funeral of Japanese Bishop

His Beatitude, Metropolitan THEODOSIUS, Primate of the Orthodox Church in America, and His Eminence, Archbishop HERMAN of Philadelphia, Vice-Chairman of the OCA Department of External Affairs, will preside at the funeral and burial of His Grace, Bishop PETER [Arihara] of Yokohama, Japan at Tokyo’s Holy Resurrection Orthodox Cathedral on May 12, 2000.

Metropolitan THEODOSIUS and Archbishop HERMAN left the US for Japan on May 10, the day of Bishop Peters repose, to participate in the installation of Bishop DANIEL [Nusiro] of Kyoto as Primate of the Autonomous Orthodox Church of Japan.

In the early 1960s, Bishop PETER had attended St Vladimir’s Seminary, Crestwood, NY, where he was a classmate of Metropolitan THEODOSIUS.

Several weeks ago, Bishop PETER had been elected Primate of the Japanese Orthodox Church. He subsequently declined his election due to failing health. At an extraordinary Local Council of the Japanese Church held on May 6, 2000, Bishop DANIEL was elected to the Metropolitan See.

May Bishop PETER’s memory be eternal!
