Students from six seminaries attend Orthodox Inter-Seminary Movement fall gathering

The fall meeting of the Orthodox Inter-Seminary Movement [IOSM] was held at Christ the Saviour Seminary here September 24-26, 2010.

In addition to students from the host school, seminarians from Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, Brookline, MA; Holy Trinity Seminary, Jordanville, NY; Saint Sophia Seminary, South Bound Brook, NJ; Saint Tikhon’s Seminary, South Canaan, PA; and Saint Vladimir’s Seminary, Crestwood, NY gathered to reflect on the theme, “Living Out Our Theology.”

The students heard two lectures, the first of which dealt with how we as Orthodox Christians address issues related to education. Participants considered such questions as the establishment of Orthodox Christian schools and colleges and ways to enable Orthodox students to live their faith and stay connected to the Church.

The second lecture dealt with living our theology in concrete ways among the poor and disadvantaged. Deacon Pavel Mucha of the Lived School of Theology/Saint John the Compassionate Mission, Toronto, ON, Canada, spoke about the life of Saint Maria Skobtsova and the example she offers to those pursuing ministries of compassion.

The next OISM meeting will be hosted at Saint Vladimir’s Seminary, February 25-27, 2011.

Initially organized in the 1960s to foster closer relationships between students of canonical Orthodox seminaries in the US and Canada, OISM was revived in 2003. Other seminaries active in OISM but unable to participate in the Johnstown gathering include Saint Herman’s Seminary, Kodiak, AK, and Saint Andrew College, Winnipeg, MB, Canada.
