Winter, Spring 2007 Liturgical Music Chat Room schedule released

The Orthodox Liturgical Music Chatroom is only one of the several new features offered by the OCA Department of Liturgical Music and Translations. Any church musician or interested person may enter the chatroom and participate in a discussion relating to Church music, hymnology, vocal technique, rubrics, etc. on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month at 8:30 PM [EST].

SYOSSET, NY [OCA Communications] — The winter/spring 2007 schedule of topical discussions available on the Orthodox Church in America’s liturgical music chat room was announced recently by Prof. David Drillock, chairman of the Department of Liturgical Music and Translations.

The chat room provides a setting for choir directors, singers, and others interested in liturgical music to discuss liturgical hymnology, repertoire selection, liturgical chants, church rubrics, vocal techniques, the choir and congregational singing, music and liturgy, and related issues.

The new chat room season will begin on January 9, 2007 with chat titled “Wisdom! Let us attend!,” during which the Rev. Sergius Halvorsen will discuss techniques for effective Church reading. Church readers and those who train them are welcome to participate.

Subsequent chat room themes include the following.

January 23 — A Guide to the Hierarchical Liturgy; His Grace, Bishop Benjamin of Berkeley, presenter.

February 6 — Conducting Tips for Beginners; Helen Breslich Erickson, presenter.

March 6 — The Rhythmic Structure of the Liturgy; Prof. Aleksei Shipovalnikov, presenter.

March 20 — The Special Melodies; Walter G. Obleschuk, presenter.

April 10 — Reviewing/selecting appropriate music to sing during liturgical services; the Very Rev. Lawrence Margitich, presenter.

April 24 — The Order of Matins; Prof. Joseph McLellan, presenter.

May 8 — Topic and presenter to be announced.

May 22 — Composing Methodology; Ivan Moody, presenter.

June 19 — Music of the Old Believers; Dr. Nicolas Schidlovsky, presenter.
