Parish Background

St George the Great Martyr Church began as a Mission in 1979.  The present land it occupies was purchased in 1980, and the ground was broken for the Church building in 1981. The first services were held in the Church in 1982, with the founding Rector, Fr. John Reeves, officiating.

The Mission was granted Parish status by Archbishop Dmitri in 1994. Under Fr. John’s leadership, the parish hall was completed in 1986. Since it’s inception, St. George Church has hosted two Diocesan Assemblies; one held in July 1985 and one in July 1995. Fr John left for another assignment in early 1996, and Fr Aaron Archer took over as Pastor in July of that same year.  After Fr. Aaron’s retirement in mid-2001, Fr. Antonio Perdomo was assigned to St. George’s Parish January of 2002.

As the Orthodox Church serving the lower Rio Grande Valley, St. George is blessed to minister to an ethnically and culturally diverse population including visitors from Mexico.  All visitors and guests are welcome, especially those who are vacationing or who enjoy spending the winter months in the tropical climate of south Texas.
