Parish Background

St. Olympia Orthodox Mission of Potsdam is under the OCA Diocese of New York/New Jersey and was founded in cooperation with the OCA Archdiocese of Canada and the Monastery of St. Silouan the Athonite, Johnstown, ON. St. Olympia was a fourth-century deaconess and good friend of St. John Chrysostom.  She was known for her intelligence, theological depth and philanthropic breadth, and these qualities make her an ideal patron saint for a remote rural region with four colleges/universities.

Members of the parish are from all ethnic backgrounds: Greek, Russian, Albanian, Ukrainian, Eritrean… and American. Services are primarily in English, and the music is from both the Byzantine chant and Russian choral traditions.
