Parish Background

St. Olympia Orthodox Mission of Potsdam is under the OCA Diocese of New York/New Jersey and was founded in cooperation with the OCA Archdiocese of Canada and the Monastery of St. Silouan the Athonite, Johnstown, ON. St. Olympia was a fourth-century deaconess and good friend of St. John Chrysostom.  She was known for her intelligence, theological depth and philanthropic breadth, and these qualities make her an ideal patron saint for a remote rural region with four colleges/universities.

Members of the parish are from all ethnic backgrounds: Greek, Russian, Albanian, Ukrainian, Eritrean… and just plain American. Services are primarily in English, and the music is from both the Byzantine chant and Russian choral traditions. The community is a mix of students, post-doctoral researchers, faculty, professionals as well as local families. It is a blend of “cradle Orthodox,” converts to the faith and people exploring Orthodoxy.  As of July 2018, the community is cared for by Fr. Peter Irfan, Acting Rector, who is our first resident priest. Formerly, priests travelled to serve the community on weekends and were part of the OCA Archdiocese of Canada: primarily Fr. David Edwards, Fr. Luke Majoros.
