Parish Background
In the fall of 1993, the Very Rev. Fr. George Sondergaard and about 12 Orthodox faithful gathered at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Albuquerque to discuss the feasibility of an English- language OCA mission. The consensus was that it was not only feasible, but necessary. With the prayers of All the Saints of North America, a commitment was made to work for this goal. The pastor of St. Mary’s allowed the burgeoning Orthodox community to use an empty classroom where they built an Altar, Proskomedia table, Iconostasis, and a reader’s stand. All Saints of North America Orthodox Mission was born as services commenced.
With time and patience, the community grew. The need for a permanent worship space was apparent. God answered our prayers, and we found a piece of property that was nearly an acre. We took possession of the property on Friday, March 21, 1996. After a great deal of manual work, we were ready for our first services in one week. On Palm Sunday in 1996, we had our first Divine Liturgy amidst great joy and thanksgiving. We also had the full cycle of services for Holy Week and Pascha. His Eminence, Archbishop Dmitri, visited the parish in February of 1997 to bless the work accomplished by the mission and to encourage its members. Over the next six years, the mission continued to grow and prosper.
Eventually, we moved on from the property purchased in 1996, and in September of 2003, the parish closed on a nearby property. The vision was for a new Church and hall in the far North Rio Grande valley. The parish hall was built in early 2004, and was used for liturgical and fellowship purposes. Archbishop Dmitri visited shortly after Pentecost of 2004 to bless the site of our Church. However, due to the rising cost of building materials in 2005, the parish postponed further construction.
On August 1, 2010, Fr. George retired with the title Pastor Emeritus of All Saints of North America, and was awarded a special Gramota for his many years of fruitful service. In conjunction to his retirement, the mission he started in Albuquerque received parish status. On that same day, Fr. Nikolay Miletkov was appointed as the Rector of the parish. He and Fr. George shared a great deal of love and respect for each other. Even while being retired, Fr. George continued to give inspiring sermons, hear Confessions, and pastorally minister to the parish. Fr. Nikolay and all the faithful greatly appreciated Fr. George’s wisdom, humility, and exceptional love for all!
On Bright Wednesday, May 8, 2013, Fr. George fell asleep in the Lord from a heart attack. He had just concelebrated, with great joy, the Paschal services greeting all with the words, “Christ is Risen!” The passing away of the humble and beloved founder of the parish was a very difficult time for the clergy and faithful of All Saints of North America. However, the Paschal joy of Bright Week comforted all in the assurance of Fr. George’s prayers for the parish, and community!
By God’s grace, on our patronal feast, Sunday, June 21, 2020, the groundbreaking of the Church took place. Six years later, on the feast of All Saints of North America, June 14, 2026, His Eminence Archbishop Alexander, and his Grace Bishop Gerasim, Consecrated the Church to the glory of God! They were joined by numerous clergy and faithful.
Considering the many obstacles large and small that were met during the building process it is clear that: “Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.” (Psalm 127:1)
We give thanks to God for all! Special appreciation is expressed to the following, due to a difficult and prolonged construction process: Building Committee Chair, Dr. Daniel Robson, Parish Council President, Stephen Othling, and our Architectural Consultant, Presbytera Mirela Tudora. We thank God for the very generous donors who made the building of All Saints of North America a priority in their lives!
