Parish Background

Saint Nicholas Chapel is located onboard a military installation. If you are active duty, retired military, or a DOD cardholder, you are welcome to attend services at any time. All others should call the chapel manager at 910-450-0991 to obtain information regarding base access.

Saint Nicholas Military Chapel is located onboard Camp Gilbert Johnson, a satellite camp of Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina. The chapel has been served by an Orthodox priest (chaplain) for more than thirty years. The camp was originally named Montford Point and was built in 1942. Between 1942 and 1949, the camp at Montford Point was a recruit depot for black recruits, training 20,000 African Americans during that period. In 1974, Montford Point was renamed Camp Gilbert H. Johnson in honor of the late Sergeant Major Gilbert H. “Hashmark” Johnson, one of the first African Americans to enlist in the United States Marine Corps.
